In 1861, 7,000 Hispanos woke one morning to discover they and the land they settled were now in the newly formed Colorado Territory. These Hispanos became unhappy in their new surroundings and weary of the new territorial laws that ultimately led to much loss of land. Within two years, they petitioned to be returned to New Mexico -- along with their lands on the Conejos and Sangre de Cristo land grants. Learn about New Mexico's efforts to reclaim its people and land, and about the struggles experienced by Colorado's Hispano territorial assemblymen due to cultural conflict and institutional racism. This book is of much historical interest! 400 pages, published by the University of Colorado Press in March 2020. SIGNED copies of "Pleas and Petitions" are available for $40 from the Colorado Society of Hispanic Genealogy. Includes shipping. Send your check to CSHG, 2300 South Patton Court, Denver, CO 80219.
